Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast with a camera, wanting to pick up a hobby, or even just curious about observing nature, the Philadelphia and Northern Delaware region is full of scenic parks, gardens, and trails perfect for nature photography. As a lifestyle and nature photographer, I love places that offer variety, beauty, and a sense of presence.

I feel so connected to nature and photography merges so seamlessly with being present in nature. Someone once told me photographers are hard to go on walks with because they’ll be so slow, stopping to capture things, you’ll be waiting on them half the time. I love that, because it’s true, and it’s a gift. You have to be able to stop and be in the moment in order to capture it. That’s photography in a nutshell. Being in the moment + being in nature..? A match made in heaven.

Here are my Top 5 Favorite Nature Photography Locations in the Philly and Delaware area (in no particular order):

1. John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge (Philadelphia, PA)

Wild, peaceful, and teeming with life.
Located near the Philadelphia Airport, John Heinz is a surprisingly serene oasis in the city. With marshes, wooded trails, boardwalks, and birdwatching platforms, it’s ideal for nature lovers and photographers who want to capture wildlife, water reflections, and dramatic skies.

Why I love it:

• There’s several diverse habitats
• Great for bird photography and wide landscapes
• Accessible yet remote-feeling

Best for: Landscape photography, Wildlife photography
Season highlight: Fall & Spring migration & Summer wildflowers

2. Longwood Gardens (Kennett Square, PA)

Elegant. Lush. Iconic.
Longwood Gardens is one of the most breathtaking places in the region. With formal gardens, greenhouses, wooded areas, meadows, waterlily ponds and fountains, there’s endless beauty and wonder conjured up from the vast range of plants and life on the property. It’s a great place to walk for several hours and just see what grabs your eye.

Why I love it:

• Extremely large variety of plant kingdoms including rare and endangered species
• You can spend an entire day wandering the grounds and conservatory
• Water elements, treehouses, and lights!

Best for: Landscape and Nature/ Botanical photography
Season highlight: Every season is a highlight! Holiday lights are legendary though.

3. Wissahickon Valley Park (Philadelphia, PA)

A painterly dreamscape of woodlands, rocky terrain, and creek right around the city.
Wissahickon Valley Park is one of the most breathtaking natural spots in Philadelphia. It offers miles of scenic trails, a winding creek, stone bridges, and deep forest vibes. Whether you’re looking for quiet moments, wide shots of rocky outcrops, or magical golden light filtering through the trees, this park offers it all. It feels like a hidden world just minutes from Center City.

Why I love it:

• Dramatic natural backdrops: cliffs, bridges, and creeks
• Forest light that changes beautifully by season and time of day

Chanticleer isn’t your average botanical garden, it’s an explosion of creativity come to life, a living canvas filled with winding paths, stone ruins, and ever-changing plant life. Every corner of this garden is full of thoughtful design and surprising beauty.

Why I love it:

• Artistic garden layouts with layered depth
• Gorgeous textures and native plant blooms
• Every visit feels different

5. FDR Park (South Philadelphia, PA)

Urban wild meets weeping willows and wetlands.
Tucked in South Philly, FDR Park is an under appreciated gem with a lake, birdlife, tall grasses, and winding paths. It’s a go-to for nature photography with an urban twist. It’s also not a bad spot for a picnic! I was shocked when I lived in South Philly and discovered this huge green space.

Why I love it:

• Reflective lake views and soft light
• An unassuming escape in the city
• Gorgeous aquatic plants and community gardens add diverse plant textures

Best for: Environmental photography, Documentary photography, Portraits
Season highlight: Late Spring & Fall
